Into the Key of Law: Transposing Musical Improvisation. The Case of Child Protection in Northern Ireland <\/em>seeks to realise the craft of improvising well via an attentive listening to the improvisational heart of Western common law and justice. Through this, the project aims to encourage more creative and responsive legal decision-making. The particular arena of attention in this instance is Northern Irish child protection law.<\/p>\n

What is Hydra:
Traditional moot court training is often criticised for failing to adequately prepare advocates to be nimble-footed in the courtroom and able to respond quickly and responsively to unexpected situations. In contrast, <\/span>Hydra<\/em>, named after the serpent-like water monster with numerous heads in Greek mythology, hones legal argumentation skills, requiring participants to be Hydra-headed and skilled at rapidly analysing a legal issue from a variety of angles and perspectives, teaching advocates to be prepared for the unexpected. Inspired by Cobra, John Zorn\u2019s improvised musical game piece, Hydra sharpens these skills by requiring participants to:<\/span><\/p>\n

Within the same case:
\u2013 Move to a new thread of argument;
\u2013 Rehearse an argument already advanced;
\u2013 Become a witness;
\u2013 Advocate on behalf of a different party;
\u2013 Deal-with a witness having gone off-script:
\u2013 Rebut what the witness has said by recollection of contradictory evidence; and
\u2013 Lead the witness to a conclusion which assists their argument;
\u2013 Become at ease with overarching techniques;
\u2013 Better cope with unexpected disruptions and uncertainties; and
\u2013 Reduce argument to a time limited form.<\/p>\n\n\n
